At 21 years old, I went into a partnership with my dad and we built and opened a beer bar and restaurant called the Suds Hut. I owned that from 1968 thru 1981. During that time I also had an outfitting and guiding business taking hunters into the mountains for a week at a time. When I sold the bar, I went into the excavating business and subdividing of property which, of course, lead to the real estate in 1982 and I have been doing that ever since.
I have been a real estate broker since 1992 and have owned my own company all that time I have for 30 years specialized in farm and ranch sales, my largest single sale is 13 million and my largest sale to one client is 20 million.

Hobbies: I was a trap shooter for about 4 years and traveled into Canada and the western U.S. and, if I don’t say so myself, was pretty good. I also rodeoed as a “bulldogger “ [ steer wrestling] for about 8 years. Shooting is my main hobby though along with horse and mule packing into the backcountry. I used to ride snowmobiles a lot but now enjoy riding side by side 4 wheelers.

Sandy Ballou has led an exciting life of various professions, grounded by his respect and belief in agriculture and the benefits of an outdoor lifestyle. While attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Sandy would leave for Wyoming the day school got out every year to work at the R Lazy S Ranch and returned the day before school began. Following Thacher he spent the next eight years in Oregon working as a fresh produce shipper, packer and broker. In 1997, Sandy and his family returned to Grass Valley, California, and bought a portion of his grandfather’s ranch. Along with his wife Sarah, Sandy started a boarding and training facility. Several years later, Sandy purchased the local saddle shop and created Sierra Saddlery and Farrier Supply. Sandy has received gubernatorial appointments from both Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Gov. Edmond G. Brown to serve on the 17th District Agricultural Association fair board where Sandy served for 13 years. Sandy was also a member of Nevada County Farm Bureau where he served on the board of directors for 9 years and served 2 years as president. Sandy continues to enjoy training horses, running a few cows, and hunting and fishing as time allows. Sandy is an advocate of the outdoor lifestyle believing that the best lessons in life are taught by animals, dirt and nature.

He graduated Summa Cum Laude at the top of his business class from Auburn University with a BSBA in Supply Chain Management and later worked in Global Ops for both Apple and Advanced Micro Devices. .

When not driving from place to place seeing the wonders of Texas with his sidekick, a yellow lab named Trace, Reid is pursuing his passions in the outdoors by working on a ranch, hunting, fishing or spending quality time with his friends and family.

Doug Bear joined Peoples Company in 2019 and is involved with the facilitation of land auctions, land brokerage, and land management. A native of Russell, Iowa, Doug grew up on a small cow/calf operation and attended Iowa State University, where he obtained his Bachelor of Science (2007) and Master of Science (2011) in Animal Science. During graduate school, Doug evaluated Iowa’s water quality impairments within the Rathbun Lake watershed.

Doug previously served as the Director of Industry Relations for over seven years at the Iowa Beef Industry Council in Ames, Iowa. He was responsible for coordinating producer communication and beef checkoff compliance activities, strategic planning of producer investments and fiscal year budgets, and building nationally recognized beef checkoff programs (Beef Quality Assurance). He is an experienced team-builder and focused on achieving result-oriented outcomes.
