It was established on July 1, 1908 by President Theodore Roosevelt and named for the Arapaho tribe of Native Americans which previously inhabited the Colorado Eastern Plains. The forest includes part of the high Rockies and river valleys in the upper watershed of the Colorado River and South Platte River. The forest is largely in Grand and Clear Creek counties, but spills over into neighboring (in descending order of land area) Gilpin, Park, Routt, Jackson, and Jefferson counties. The ranch has excellent mule deer habitat & hunting, a mule deer scoring 225 was harvested on the ranch in recent years. Elk hunting in early seasons would be best on the accessible Arapaho National Forest but during the later seasons, elk can be harvested on the ranch. The ranch is located in game management unit 27. The fishing on the ranch would be mostly for brook trout and some smaller rainbow in its current configuration but could be improved to make a very nice fishery with a number of ponds throughout the riparian areas.There is excellent fishing in the nearby Wolford Reservoir as well as in the Colorado and Blue Rivers and on Muddy Creek.Red Dirt Creek currently meanders for .85 of a mile though the property and could be developed into an excellent fishery with numerous ponds throughout the lower portion of the ranch.
